Which Area of Phuket Is Best for Families?

For a family renting a villa, the most practical parts of Phuket are the south (Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong) and the north-west (Bang Tao and Laguna), where most families with children live. The south wins on level streets and shops within reach; the north-west wins on a long, gently sloping beach and green paths, at the price of longer drives. Patong is the area that suits family life least, because of its nightlife, heavy traffic and crowds.

Which areas do families choose?

Families choose an area here by ordinary days rather than by the postcard beach: where the water is calm, where you can push a buggy, how far the shop is and whether other families live nearby. A house on a hillside with a view loses to a modest house in an estate if there is nowhere to walk with a child from the gate.

Most families settle in two parts of the island. The south, meaning Rawai, Nai Harn and Chalong, has level streets and shops close together. The north-west, meaning Bang Tao and Laguna, has a long beach with a gentle slope into the water and green paths for walks. Kata and Karon sit in between for families with older children, and the quiet north near the airport suits those who drive anyway.

Send your dates in the chat with the ages of your children and the number of bedrooms. We come back with houses we have looked at in the areas that fit, and with what each one lacks for a family. Ask us for the current rate of each house.

South: Rawai, Nai Harn and Chalong

The south suits families who value level streets, plenty of shops within reach and neighbours with children of the same age. Supermarkets, markets and pharmacies stand close together, and most of daily life fits inside your own area.

The honest drawback is the sea. Rawai itself has no good swimming beach, so families drive to the neighbouring bays. Nai Harn is calm in the dry season, while in the rainy months its waves stay strong almost all the time. Around the Nai Harn lake runs a path where parents walk with buggies and children ride scooters in the evening.

Schools are the other thing to weigh. Several private and international schools operate in Chalong itself, and many families pick the school first and then look for a house a few streets away. From Rawai, the international schools further north take noticeably longer at rush hour than the map suggests.

From the south it is a short drive to the parks and shopping centres of Phuket Town, while the west-coast beaches lie over the hills. Families torn between the south and the north-west can start with our Bang Tao or Rawai comparison.

03

North-west: Bang Tao and Laguna

The north-west suits families who want a long beach with a gentle entry and quiet green paths. In Laguna the paths run along the water between the complexes, and children quickly find company by the shared pools and on the playgrounds.

Bang Tao is closer to a suburb: wide streets, guarded estates, supermarkets with European food, international schools and clinics. Those schools sit nearby, towards Cherng Talay and Thalang, and that is one of the main reasons families pick the north-west for a long stay.

The price is distance. Shops are gathered around a few commercial streets, and without a car the supermarket and after-school clubs are far away. The road into town is longer than from the south, while the airport and the quiet northern beaches are closer.

Between the two zones sit Surin and Kamala. From Kamala the morning route to the schools in the north and centre of the island is workable; from Surin the international schools lie to the east, in the direction of Thalang and Cherng Talay.

04

Kata, Karon, Patong and the north

Kata and Karon are a compromise for families with older children: the beach is close, the streets are lively and there is somewhere to go in the evening. With toddlers, high season there can be noisy. For a school run the morning route is long, since the international schools are in the centre and north of the island.

Patong suits almost no one living with a child. Nightlife, dense traffic and crowds on the promenade get in the way of both sleep and walks, and for big shopping centres, hospitals and international schools families drive over the pass towards Kathu and Phuket Town.

Mai Khao and Nai Yang, in the north near the airport, are chosen by families who value quiet and are ready to drive children to classes and shopping. The nearest international schools are to the south, towards Thalang and Cherng Talay, reached by the main road.

Worth knowingConstruction is going on in many areas, especially where new complexes are growing. Ask the owner what is being built next door and look at recent satellite images before you book, not after you move in.

How does the season change the choice?

Calm water depends on the side of the island and the month more than on the name of the beach. On the west coast the sea is calm in the dry season; from May to October waves and strong currents arrive, and swimming there with a child becomes risky. In those months families from the south drive to bays sheltered from the west wind, the north-west switches to the pool, and calmer water is found in Kata bay and on the east side of the island.

That is why the rental season matters as much as the area. A family coming for the dry months can choose by beach; a family staying through the rains is really choosing a house with a pool they will use every day, and the questions about pool and garden care become part of that choice.

Playgrounds are a short list. Big parks are few: the lake path in Nai Harn, the waterside paths in Laguna and the city parks with playgrounds in Phuket Town, where families from nearby areas go at weekends. Elsewhere a playground usually means a condominium courtyard or a play room in a shopping centre.

What should you check before booking?

Before booking, trace on the map the route your child will make every day, then ask the owner about what the map cannot show. Owners usually know their street better than any review and answer directly when the question is specific.

Pavements are scarce almost everywhere. Inside estates people walk along quiet lanes, but stepping onto the main road with a buggy means the verge beside the scooters. Look for a busy junction between the house and the shop: it decides whether you walk or start the car for a carton of milk.

Ask for a short video of the road from the gate to the nearest shop; it shows the verge, the traffic and the dogs by the fences. The house itself is checked by its own features, collected on our page about family villas: pool depth, stairs and a proper kitchen. A family of four with pre-school children usually manages with two bedrooms and needs three once the children are teenagers or grandparents join; the layouts are on our 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom villa pages.

If school is part of the plan, choose the school first and the area second. A drive that takes twenty minutes in the middle of the day easily doubles by seven in the morning, so try the route at school time before you sign. A school year also means a long-term lease that runs through the whole high season, with its own deposit and contract terms.

  • How far it is on foot from the gate to a shop and a pharmacy, and whether there is a verge or a pavement
  • Where the nearest calm water is in the rainy season
  • Whether there is a playground, park or courtyard nearby
  • Whether a busy road runs past the gate day and night
  • Whether other families with children live in the estate or the street
  • How long the school or nursery run takes at seven in the morning
TipVisit after dark. A lane that is quiet in the afternoon can turn out to be the road to a beach bar with music; come back after sunset and you will know whether a child will fall asleep there.

Questions people ask

Is Bang Tao or Nai Harn better for a family villa holiday?

It depends on the season and the children's ages. Bang Tao has a long beach with a gentle entry, green paths and international schools nearby, but needs a car; Nai Harn has the lake path and a calm bay in the dry season, while in the rainy months its waves are strong almost all the time.

Can I rent a villa near an international school in Phuket?

Yes, and families usually do it in that order: school first, then the house. International schools are concentrated in the north and north-west, around Bang Tao, Laguna, Cherng Talay and Thalang, and several private and international schools operate in Chalong.

Where is the sea calm for small children?

In the dry season, along almost the whole west coast, especially in bays with a gentle entry. From May to October waves rise on the west side, and families swim in sheltered spots such as Kata bay, on the east side, or in their own pool.

Can we live with a child without a car?

Yes, if the house is in an estate where a shop, a pharmacy and a beach are within walking distance along quiet streets. On hillsides and in remote complexes, daily life without a car or taxis quickly becomes tiring.

Will our children have anyone to play with?

In areas where many families live, children meet at playgrounds, by shared pools and in after-school clubs. The south has many Russian-speaking families; Bang Tao and Laguna have more international ones.

What if there is a building site or a noisy road next to the house?

Building goes on in many areas, especially where new complexes are rising. Ask the owner what is planned nearby, check recent satellite images and visit after sunset to hear the evening noise.
